Saint
Filippo Smaldone
Saint Filippo Smaldone was born in Naples on 27 July 1848. He is an Italian
Catholic priest, known as the "Apostle to the Deaf"
devoting his life to charity work, trying to change the marginalized status
of the deaf.
He intended to install an institution that was devoted to the care and
education of deaf people, so in 1885 he founded the Congregation
of the Salesian Sisters of the Sacred Hearts, with the support
of Bishop Gennaro Trama.
His moral support for the poor and the deaf gave him the title of Croce
pro Ecclesia et Pontifex and payroll canon of the Cathedral of Lecce (Italy).
He died on 4 June 1923 in Lecce because of diabetes.
It was Pope John Paul II who wanted the beatification
of Smaldone. It was held on 12 May 1996. Pope Benedict XVI was
named as a Saint on 15 October 2006.
